THE RT. HON. FIELD-MARSHAL J. C. SMUTS, P.C., C.H., K.C., D.T.D., PRIME MINISTER OF THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA. |
In "Skeleton Coast" Mr. Marsh did our country a service
by turning a spotlight upon the brave deeds of men in an
almost unknown yet romantic part of our land. The story he
told there of endurance, doggedness and determination that
helped to save the lives of shipwrecked castaways has gone
round the world, exciting imaginations. Deservedly the book
broke best-seller records almost overnight. Now, again in simple language and straightforward style, Mr. Marsh tells another up-to-the-minute tale of adventure and achievement against odds in a little-known area-this time the seas beyond the "Roaring Forties". In this book he records for the first time the full story of how Prince Edward and Marion Islands were annexed by the Union and occupation successfully established against the almost unbelievable fury of the elements. I am proud of the men who carried out so difficult a task so well, just as I am of those heroes of "Skeleton Coast". I do not necessarily agree with all the opinions that are expressed in this book, but we have here another true story of modern pioneering and adventure that will, I am sure, be an inspiration to many generations to come.
